"The divine within the universe, however manifested, is my light”
Public land-grant research university
Why CS at UW-Madison?
The Department of Computer Sciences at UW-Madison stands out for its pioneering work in artificial intelligence, data science, and cybersecurity. Notable projects include the development of advanced algorithms for big data analysis and innovations in machine learning that have practical applications in fields like healthcare and finance. They also house the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, where interdisciplinary research leads to solutions in bioinformatics and computational biology. The university also counts with a remarkable, award-winning Computer Science faculty, which only makes UW-Madison a very interesting choice for me.
Research and Faculty
My top 2 professors:
- Andrea C. Arpaci-Dusseau: she researches operating systems, filesystems, and other low-level technologies. I’d love to work with that and I have some experience working with kernels, so that’s cool (and her husband is also a professor at the UWM CS dept.! he even researches the same thing as her, filesystems);
- Josiah Hanna: works on creating fully autonomous neural models through reinforcement alone! I have my own opinions around that and it’d be cool to work with him to create a real-world HAL3000/GLaDOS (/s);
Community Engagement
- Association for Computing Machinery (ACM): hosts coding competitions, hackathons, and guest lectures from industry leaders;
- Associated Students of Madison (ASM): represents student interests and facilitates campus-wide initiatives;
- Morgridge Center for Public Service: encourages students to participate in community service and social impact projects;
- Wisconsin Hoofers: outdoor adventure club to the Badger Volunteers program, which connects students with community service opportunities;
- more than 900 student organizations, so it does not end here!
Student Support and Diversity Centers
- University Health Services (UHS): mental health services, including counseling, crisis intervention, and wellness programs;
- McBurney Disability Resource Center: accommodations and support for students with disabilities;
- Multicultural Student Center (MSC) is a central hub for promoting diversity and inclusion on campus.;
- Gender and Sexuality Campus Center (GSCC) supports LGBT+ students by providing advocacy, educational programming, and a safe space for connection and support. The GSCC hosts events like Pride Prom too;
- Latinx Cultural Center (LCC) serves as a vibrant hub for cultural engagement, support, and community building.
