Private research university

Why CS at Stanford?

First of all, the university is renowned globally for its pioneering research, exceptional faculty, and several notable projects like the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL), which has made significant advancements in AI, and the Stanford Digital Library Technologies Project, which has transformed digital information access. Location’s also important: Stanford's in the heart of Silicon Valley, offering unparalleled professional opportunities. The proximity to tech giants like Google, Apple, and Facebook, as well as numerous startups, provides a vibrant ecosystem for internships, collaborations, and employment. Access to research labs such as the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) (yay, a physics national lab) and the Stanford Human-Computer Interaction Group further enriches the learning experience.

Research and Faculty

Top 2 professors (in my opinion):

  1. John Ousterhout: created the Tcl language (!!!!!!!!!!!) and currently researches network optimizations through the replacement of the TCP protocol inside datacenters through the Homa protocol;
  2. Mendel Rosenblum: co-founder of VMware (how expensive is Stanford’s faculty? 👀) and focus mainly in the virtualization field, with several patents for VMware, Inc. Ousterhoust and him are also members of PlatformLab, a group ran by the OS researches at Stanford to develop new software, such as Nanolog (a logger for C++ that works in a nanosecond resolution), and Homa (the protocol for datacenters).

Community Engagement

For Computer Science students, key groups include the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), which hosts hackathons and guest lectures, and the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Club, which focuses on AI projects and workshops. There’s the Stanford Robotics Club too, offering additional opportunities for innovation and empowerment. Beyond Computer Science, they run the Haas Center for Public Service promotes civic responsibility through community service and social impact initiatives. Cultural and affinity groups like the Stanford Latino Student Organization and the Black Student Union provide platforms for cultural celebration and advocacy.

Student Support and Diversity Centers

Key support centers include the Bridge Peer Counseling Center and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), which provide comprehensive mental health support, crisis intervention, and peer counseling. They also offer resources and programs to the LGBT community through the Queer Student Resources (QSR) center, which provides advocacy, education, and a safe space for LGBT+ students to connect and find support. There’s also the El Centro Chicano y Latino, serving as a hub for Latino cultural engagement, support, and community building.
