"The revelation of your words illuminates”
While it might not be common for you to think about Carleton when it comes to Computer Science, the college offers an excellent CS department, and its quality really shines through the research published by the university. They don’t limit themselves to Math when it comes to CS: they find real world solutions to real world problems. An example of this problem-solving ability can be seen in projects like GeoDE, which use geological data to ensure safe development in the Minneapolis area - and they don’t stop there. Some professors even use software to fight against cancer, aiding medical professionals in staging and finding the best treatment plan for cancer patients. Also, when you combine other benefits Carleton students have (such as strong support groups, 100% demonstrated need covered), studying CS there may feel like a dream.
Also Comps projects (see https://www.carleton.edu/admissions/explore/education/comps/). Looks cool.
My top 3 undergraduate research projects:
Professors I am head over heels for:
Carleton offers several community engagement activities, mainly through their student organizations. They have academic clubs, cultural clubs, service clubs, arts clubs and more. The college also encourage students to get involved in volunteer work, service projects, and civil engagement initiatives. When it comes to what I want to do at Carleton, I think their partnership with the Minnesota Geological Survey really showcases how involved they are with the surrounding community, as they offer important insight to allow a safe development of the surrounding areas and it gives their students an insider view of the seismology field, which is something I am interested.
Carleton offers a range of resources to support international students. There’s the Office of Intercultural Life (OIL), which provides academic advising, cultural programs, social events, and cultural houses - such as La Casa del Sol, offering a sense of community and belonging. The Office of International Student Life (ISL) assists with visa and immigration matters, while English Language Support caters to students needing additional language assistance. For LGBTQ+ students, the Gender and Sexuality Center is a welcoming space offering support, resources, and educational programs. The Queer Mental Health Collective provides mental health resources tailored to LGBTQ+ students. All students, including international and LGBTQ+ individuals, can access counseling and support through the Academic Support Center.
